San Luis Potosi

The name of San Luis Potosí was given in honor of San Luis King of France, and Potosí was used to compare the wealth of the mines of the Cerro de San Pedro with those of Potosí in Bolivia. Another version of the origin of the name is that was given as homage to the Viceroy Luis of Velasco.

For a time in 1863 during the French invasion of Mexico, San Luis Potosi served as the capital of the republican government under President Benito Juarez. San Luis has more bordering states (10 in total) than any other Mexican state, making it one of the more accesible states in Mexico.

The state of San Luis Potosi was founded in 1824 and it is located in the central area of Mexico.

San Luis Potosi, offers an incredible and unique kind of cultural events. "La Procesión del Silencio" (The silence procession) a Catholic festivity considered the most important and unique in Mexico. It is held every year, during the Easter week and it portrays the passion of Jesus Christ, actors travel from around the country to act in this unique representation.

The San Luis Potosi Arts Festival is held in April and usually has different exponents from diverse cultures. Some shows include regional dancing, arts and modern concerts.
